About Us

Makil & Makil Law Offices traces it origin to the year 1920, when Advocate Thomas Makil set up his law practice in Kottayam in Kerala. He soon rose to prominence as one of the leading lawyers in civil litigation. He is often remembered as a leading exponent of land reforms cases, especially when Kerala was buffeted by the Land Reforms Act. His legacy was continued by his sons Advocate James Makil and Advocate Jose Makil who were adept in civil, industrial, and banking law. Both of them are remembered for contributing immensely towards the industrial jurisprudence, especially in the fields of plantations and large-scale industries. “Makil’s Guide to Industrial Law” authored by Advocate James Makil, was the most sought- after handbook for the managerial and supervisory staff in every major plantation in Kerala. “Makil’s Law Circular” a fortnightly authored by Advocate Jose Makil, was popular among the industrial and banking fraternity.

We now have offices in Kochi, Kottayam, and Thiruvananthapuram, providing legal assistance and advice to a wide cross section of clientele ranging from corporations to individual clients, on a variety of matters.

ADVOCATE THOMAS P. MAKIL

LLM: UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK

Mr. Makil is a third-generation lawyer, following the footsteps and continuing the legacy of his grandfather (late Adv Thomas Makil), his father (late Adv Jose Makil), and his uncle (late Adv James Makil). Mr. Makil, an alumnus of the Kerala Law Academy, enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Kerala in 1997 after undergoing a year of legal apprenticeship in the chambers of his father. He also earned and LLM in Public International Law from the School of Law-University of Warwick, in the United Kingdom. He also worked, in the year 2010, as a visiting prosecutor in the Office Of The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in the Hague in the Netherlands in the case related to the prosecution of those responsible for the war crimes committed in the Central African Republic.

His areas of expertise include constitutional law, complex civil and criminal litigation, medical negligence claims, arbitration, intellectual property law, consumer protection law, and employment and industrial law, mining law, and public international law. Mr. Makil advises corporations, MSMEs, plantations, construction and real estate entities, software companies, educational institutions, including schools and colleges, publishers, hospitals, financial institutions, hotels, resorts & hospitality divisions,
charitable organizations, and private individuals. Various confederations of employers as well as trade unions seek his legal assistance and advice.

ADVOCATE LEEPA PHILIP

Mrs. Philip, an accomplished lawyer since 1999, is our presence in Thiruvananthapuram. An alumnus of the Kerala Law Academy, she enrolled in the year 1999. She has an excellent track record in Arbitration, civil litigation, mining law, employment & industrial law, and matrimonial law. She advices corporate entities, educational institutions, and charitable organizations, construction companies, hospitals and health care institutions, and private individuals. She appears before the District Courts, Arbitral Tribunals, Labour Courts &Industrial Tribunals, Forums, and various Commissions, and the Kerala Lok Ayukta. She heads our Thiruvananthapuram office. Outside of office hours, Leepa indulges in
culinary experiments.

ADVOCATE GEORGE K.GEORGE

LLB: CMR LAW SCHOOL BENGALURU

Mr. George, enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Karnataka in the year 2020 and joined the law offices of R & J Associates in Bengaluru. In the year 2022, he shifted his practice to Kerala and joined the Kottayam office of Makil and Makil. He has experience in banking law, employment & industrial law, consumer protection law, and arbitration. Mr. George appears in various District Courts and subordinate courts, and before a wide range of Tribunals, Forums, and Commissions, Arbitral Tribunals, as well as before the Kerala Lok Ayukta. He advises and appears for
corporations, firms, plantations, educational institutions, contractors & construction entities, realtors & developers, retail businesses, and financial institutions. Mr. George nurtures an avid interest in movies and automobiles. Born into a family of planters, it is no perchance that he has a natural instinct for agriculture and plantation.

ADVOCATE MANU NAIR .G

Mr. Manu, who was called to the Bar in 2021, principally handles the Firm’s work in the High Court of Kerala, and also appears before the various District centers as well as before a wide spectrum of subordinate courts, Forums, Tribunals, and Commissions. An alumnus of the Faculty of Law – VIT Chennai campus, Manu later went on to earn an LLM in Alternate Dispute Resolution from the Jindal Global Law School in Haryana. He advises clients in company law, arbitration, civil disputes, and matrimonial law as well as complex criminal matters. Outside office hours, chances are likely that you would find Manu strumming on his guitar to popular lyrics. A movie buff, Manu is always seen vying for the opening tickets of blockbusters.

ADVOCATE BHARATH MURALI

LLB: VIT CHENNAI

Mr. Murali, enrolled as an Advocate in the year 2021 after completing his Bachelor of Laws from the VIT Chennai campus. He has to his credit an LLM in Alternate Dispute Resolution from Jindal Global Law School in Haryana. He advises a wide spectrum of clientele, including realtors & developers, financial institutions, educational institutions, private individuals, NGOs, and so on. His areas of expertise include real estate & property law, employment & industrial law, matrimonial law, arbitration and civil law. Mr Murali appears before the High Court of Kerala, Kerala Real Estate Regulatory Authority, Real Estate Regulatory Appellant Tribunal, various civil and criminal courts, family courts, and other judicial and quasi- judicial authorities, including Labour Courts and Industrial Tribunals. A keen vegetarian, Bharath loves indulging in vegetarian delicacies, utilizing every opportunity to explore new and unique eateries.

ADVOCATE SIDHARTH MURALI

LLB: SN COLLEGE ERNAKULAM

Sidharth enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Kerala in the year 2024 after completing his five-year undergraduate programme in law from the S.N College, Ernakulam District. Based out of the Firm’s Cochin office, he appears before the Ernakulam District Court and various subordinate courts. Sidharth also actively assists the senior colleagues in legal research, client service, and litigation. Outside office hours, Sidharth is involved in a variety of community-enrichment programmes and
philanthropic initiatives.

ADVOCATE VINAYAK P. NAMPOOTHIRIPAD

LLB: MSR COLLEGE OF LAW, BENGALURU

Vinayak is an alumnus of the MSR college of Law, Bengaluru. After joining
Makil & Makil as an intern, he enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of
Kerala in the year 2024. Based out of the firm’s office in Kottayam, Vinayak
is actively engaged in civil and criminal litigation. He assists senior
associates in legal research and pretrial preparation. His areas of
engagement include consumer protection law, civil litigation, economic

offenses, and labour and industrial laws. On the lighter side, Vinayak is a
motorcycle enthusiast and is also learning the nuances of calisthenics.

ADVOCATE AJAY SANKAR
